AFA's "The Hardest Crossword" is a unique initiative which raises Alzheimer's awareness by having people briefly experience common Alzheimer's disease symptoms without even knowing it. Crosswords are based on the true life of someone with Alzheimer's, developed from information shared by their family. Because the crossword cannot be solved by anyone who doesn't know the person's life story (a fact which isn't shared until the puzzle's end), people trying to complete it experience confusion, frustration and an inability to unlock the answers, symptoms someone with Alzheimer's may experience. The campaign has reached over 50 million people to date.
