Angelica Hale for THE BIG ASK: THE BIG GIVE PSA
In 2018, NKF focused a new public awareness campaign for kids with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Partnering with Angelica Hale, this 60-second PSA for THE BIG ASK: THE BIG GIVE campaign inspires children with CKD by having a "kid-to-kid conversation" with Angelica, who tells them CKD doesn't mean an end to their dreams. And Angelica knows this all too well. At 4 years old, she developed a bacterial infection in her lungs that would develop into double pneumonia and cause her to go septic, destroying her kidneys and ravaging her body. After an 80-day battle at the hospital, Angelica pulled through and returned home to her family. But the fight wasn't over. More than a year of dialysis passed before the family found out that Angelica's mother, Eva, was a perfect match. In 2013, mother and daughter underwent surgery and Angelica woke up with a new kidney. Five years later, Angelica is happy and healthy. "Now I have a new life with great, big dreams," Angelica says in the PSA, revealing that she had always wanted to become a superstar. And in 2017, her biggest dream came true when she auditioned for America's Got Talent and got the Golden Buzzer - making her an early fan-favorite and an eventual runner up! All of this was made possible by living organ donation. "To all the kids and grownups waiting for a kidney out there, just hang in there!" Angelica says. "Be strong! And don't give up hope!
