Hospital Sues Thousands of Patients Over Bills
Medical debt is a reality for many Americans. Two out of three bankruptcies are tied to it. Sometimes, hospitals go after patients who don’t pay by hounding them with collection calls. CNN senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen went to New Mexico where a hospital was going even further—suing its own patients and garnishing their wages. CNN’s investigation found the hospital had sued more than 3,000 people to collect debts. Cohen talked with a group of patients who said their hospital was causing terror and financial hardship to many people in their small community.
