The Gift of Mobility
The Gift of Mobility tells the story of the Women Orthopaedist Global Outreach (WOGO) team of female orthopedic surgeons, their surgical and recovery teams, and their medical trip to repair and replace knees at the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The film shows the team's work in the DRC both at the hospital and during outreach activities outside the city.
WOGO is led by a team of 7 female orthopaedic surgeons. The team's goal is to transform lives in under-served global communities by reducing the chronic burden of arthritis and disability through total joint reconstruction. They want to leave the communities they visit healthier, more knowledgeable and inspired to reach beyond prior limits.
Through their medical practices throughout the United States, the surgeons witness the extensive impact and severity of knee arthritis in patients and the factors that limit their access to orthopaedic care. Through its numerous medical missions, Operation Walk has experienced widespread levels of unmet needs among women in under-served communities worldwide. The surgeons of WOGO seek to improve the health and mobility of anyone in need in the communities they serve but have a special passion for treating women.
